I received an invitation letter from Beijing Royal School to participate to the graduation ceremony giving a short speech with a few words of encouragement and sharing with the students my experience in China. Here is my speech, and a few pictures I received of how they saw it at the graduation.
« 大家好！首先我要祝贺北京皇家学院的学子们顺利毕业(Hello! First of all, congratulations to all of you for your graduation at the Beijing Royal School.)
I am Sophia Schleicher and I am happy to join you for this important day. I was where you are now about a year ago, when I graduated from high school in Paris. I know many of you have already chosen a prestigious university where to continue your education. I did that too when I graduated, but before beginning my studies I wanted to explore a new culture different from what I knew by growing up in Europe, and I chose China. I volunteered to teach Ballet in a primary school in Shanghai. This amazing experience did not just allow me to discover educational methods in China, but I was profoundly touched and deeply changed by the direct contact with the people, with the children and teachers in the school and with a Chinese family with whom I lived. And it is through this social experience and contact with the local people, that I discovered the habits and customs of the country and through the friendships I created I became part of this community and still feel as if a part of me remains ingrained in that region of the globe.
Of course when being in a new environment, in a new culture, it is tempting and easier to get near to people who share your same culture, who think like you and have your same habits. Because through them you can find your comfort zone and landmarks. But if you have the opportunity to explore a new world, grab it as the chance to shift your point of view and open yourself, your mind and your heart to newness.
I know you have been immersed in an intercultural education during your studies at the Beijing Royal School, with International programs and diverse cultural exchanges combining both Chinese and Western culture, that make you flourish as global citizens.
What I experienced this year, is that to deeply understand a new culture, you have to get ahead all the prejudice one can hear or read, and with open-mindedness try to understand it. Because if you think about it, what you consider as normal is in fact just what you are used to in the environment you grew up. So, trying to understand a new culture through getting to know the people, is in fact the opportunity to discover another way to look at the world, that maybe could have been yours if you were born there. And combining this multiple understandings and international perspective gives you the possibility to have a broader, multicultural and unique vision. So I hope if you have the opportunity to go to study abroad, you will dedicate your time not just to learn new knowledge but also to discover other ways of thinking and other ways of living. And through the relations you will create you will feel more part of a diverse, multifaceted but unique humanity.

Ho ricevuto una lettera d’invito dalla Beijing Royal School per partecipare alla cerimonia di laurea con un breve discorso di incoraggiamento in cui condividere con gli studenti la mia esperienza in Cina. Ecco il mio discorso e alcune immagini che mi hanno mandato della cerimonia.
« 大家好！首先我要祝贺北京皇家学院的学子们顺利毕业(Buongiorno! Prima di tutto, congratulazioni per la vostra laurea alla Royal School di Pechino)
Sono Sophia Schleicher e sono felice di unirmi a voi per questo importante giorno. Ero dove siete ora circa un anno fa, quando ho finito il liceo a Parigi. So che molti di voi hanno già scelto un’università dove continuare gli studi. Anch’io l’ho fatto quando mi sono diplomata, ma prima di iniziare gli studi universitari ho voluto consacrare un anno per esplorare una nuova cultura, diversa da quella che conoscevo essendo cresciuta in Europa, e ho scelto la Cina. Ho fatto volontariato insegnando danza classica in una scuola primaria di Shanghai. Questa incredibile esperienza non mi ha solo permesso di scoprire i metodi educativi in Cina, ma sono stata toccata e profondamente cambiata dal contatto diretto con le persone, con i bambini e gli insegnanti della scuola e con una famiglia cinese con cui ho vissuto. È attraverso questa esperienza umana e il contatto con la gente locale che ho scoperto gli usi e i costumi del Paese ed è attraverso le amicizie che ho creato che sono entrata a far parte di questa comunità; ancora adesso è come se una parte di me sia rimasta in quella regione del mondo.
Naturalmente quando ci si trova in un nuovo ambiente, in una nuova cultura, si è tentati di avvicinarsi a persone che condividono la propria cultura, che la pensano come noi e hanno le nostre stesse abitudini. Perché attraverso di loro ci si ritrova nella propria zona di comfort, con punti di riferimento noti. Ma se avete l’opportunità di esplorare un mondo nuovo, coglietela come l’occasione per spostare il vostro punto di vista e aprirvi, aprire la vostra mente e il vostro cuore alla novità.
So che siete stati immersi in un’educazione interculturale durante i vostri studi alla Scuola Reale di Pechino, con programmi internazionali e diversi scambi culturali che hanno aperto una finestra sulla cultura occidentale e hanno cominciato a farvi crescere come cittadini del mondo.
Quello che ho sperimentato quest’anno, è che per capire profondamente una nuova cultura bisogna mettere da parte tutti i pregiudizi che si possono avere e, con apertura mentale, cercare di capire. Perché, se ci pensiamo, quello che si considera normale è in realtà solo quello a cui si è abituati nell’ambiente in cui si cresce. Quindi, cercare di capire una nuova cultura attraverso il contatto con le persone è l’occasione per scoprire un altro modo di guardare il mondo, che avrebbe potuto essere il proprio se si fosse nati lì. E mettendo insieme questa comprensione allargata e questa prospettiva internazionale dà la possibilità di avere una visione più ampia, multiculturale e unica. Quindi spero che se avrete l’opportunità di andare all’estero, dedicherete il vostro tempo non solo ad imparare nuove conoscenze, ma anche a scoprire altri modi di pensare e altri modi di vivere. E attraverso le relazioni che creerete vi potrete sentire più parte di una – per quanto diversa e multiforme – unica umanità
