J’ai eu la chance de passer le nouvel an chinois avec une famille chinoise, immergée dans les traditions de cette fête très importante en Chine. Suivant le calendrier lunaire, le nouvel an a eu lieu le 24 et 25 janvier, introduisant la nouvelle année du rat.
L’importance de cette célébration se rapproche de celle de Noël pour nous occidentaux. Les familles se rassemblent autour d’un repas convivial et animé. Les traditions sont encore très encrées, du moins dans la famille avec laquelle j’étais. La coutume est pour les familles de se rassembler chez les parents du père pour les jours du nouvel an et ensuite éventuellement rendre visite aux parents de la mère.
Je me suis donc retrouvée au sein de la famille de mes colocataires, rassemblant au total dix personnes et trois générations. Au programme : préparation des plats traditionnels du nouvel an, les 饺子 (dumplings). Ce sont comme des raviolis avec une pâte faite à la main, qu’on remplit ensuite tous ensembles en famille. Le soir du 24 nous avons regardé le spectacle annuel à la télévision sans oublier de manger les dumplings de minuit. Le nouvel an est également l’occasion pour les familles de s’offrir des cadeaux et notamment les 红包, enveloppes avec de l’argent, données par les générations plus anciennes aux enfants. L’atmosphère est très festive et j’ai encore une fois pu expérimenter l’hospitalité chinoise au sein de cette famille qui m’a accueillie chaleureusement durant cette fête généralement réservée à la famille.
I had the chance to spend the Chinese New Year with a Chinese family, immersed in the traditions of this very important holiday in China. According to the lunar calendar, the New Year took place on January 24th and 25th, introducing the Year of the Rat.
This celebration is for Chinese people as important than Christmas for western countries. Families gather around a convivial and lively meal. Traditions are still very much ingrained, at least in the family I was with. The custom is to gather at the father’s parents’ home for New Year’s Eve and then possibly visit the mother’s relatives in the following days.
So, I found myself in the family of my roommates, bringing together ten people and three generations. The programme: preparation of traditional New Year’s Eve dishes, the 饺子 (dumplings). They are like ravioli with a handmade dough, which we then fill together as a family. On the evening of the 24th we watched the annual show on television and ate the midnight dumplings. The New Year is also an occasion for families to give each other gifts, especially the 红包 envelopes with money given by the older generations to the children.
The atmosphere is very festive, and I was once again able to experience the Chinese hospitality in this family, who gave me a warm welcome during this holiday usually reserved for the family.
