Je me sens parfois bien bête … comme lorsque je sors du métro et que je vois tout le monde entrer dans la gare avec des parapluies. Je me dis – en tant que bonne Parisienne – que je vais arriver à la maison trempée.
C’est pourquoi c’est toujours avec surprise que je vois en sortant de la gare un grand soleil et que je comprends que je ne suis pas encore totalement synchronisée avec la mentalité chinoise, et que je suis loin de vouloir me protéger des rayons de soleil dans la ville comme le font les chinois.
C’est amusant quand même … se dire que pour nous européens aujourd’hui avoir la peau bronzée est un signe de vacances, de bienêtre et de beauté, que beaucoup recherchent. Ici c’est l’inverse et j’ai eu l’occasion d’en parler avec une amie chinoise qui m’a expliqué que pour les chinois, plus la peau est blanche, plus les visages sont considérés comme harmonieux et beaux. Les habitants de Shanghai se protègent donc de toutes les manières du soleil dans la rue : les passants avec des parapluies et les motards et cyclistes avec une chemise en n’enfilant que les bras, avec les boutons déboutonnées sur le dos.
Je trouve ces différences de culture vraiment intéressantes !

I sometimes feel a bit stupid… like for instance when I get out of the subway and see everyone entering the station with umbrellas. I tell myself – with the mentality of a good Parisian – there we go ! I am going to arrive at home soaked.
That is why it is always with surprise that I then see a great sunshine and that I understand that I am not yet totally synchronized with the Chinese mentality… and that I am far from wanting to protect myself from the sun rays in the city like Chinese people do.
It’s funny, though… to think that for us Europeans tanning is a sign of holidays, well-being and beauty, that many people are looking for. Here it is the opposite and I had the opportunity to talk about it with a Chinese friend who explained to me that for Chinese people, the whiter the skin is, the more harmonious and beautiful the faces are considered. Therefore, the inhabitants of Shanghai protect themselves in all ways from the sun on the street: passers-by with umbrellas and motorcyclists and cyclists with an upside-down shirt, putting on only the sleeve of their shirts and letting the back undone to protect their arms.  
I find these cultural differences really interesting!
